Missoula's Most Endangered Historic Sites
Preserve Historic Missoula's Most Endangered Historic Sites List is intended to generate a community discussion about the challenges that face historic sites, and to begin crafting strategies that ensure their preservation. Since 2008, PHM has produced several Most Endangered Lists. Since the publication of our two Most Endangered Historic Sites Lists PHM is proud to announce that several of these endangered properties have been saved, including the Missoula County Fairgrounds, the Bonner millworker's homes, and the Fort Missoula Post Hospital. Unfortunately, PHM regrets to say there have been set backs in our efforts to preserve our most endangered historic sites. PHM spent a considerable amount of effort in trying to secure passage of the Historic Preservation Ordinance which would have helped secure the future of our historic districts. PHM also spent a considerable amount of time assisting the community of Missoula with the efforts to preserve Lincoln School. Despite these set backs, PHM is dedicated towards preserving our most endangered historic sites.
Nominate a building or site to be considered for inclusion in PHM's list of Eleven Most Endangered Sites
Preserve Historic Missoula periodically develops a list of places in the Missoula area that our board members consider to be historically important but threatened by a variety of forces. The list is not intended to criticize public entities or private owners, but to stimulate a community dialogue about the importance of our historic built environment and historic natural landscape and the impact of the losses of any of their significant elements. In the past, this dialogue has led to positive outcomes for many of the properties we have listed, as well as an enhanced awareness of the rich historic heritage that surrounds us.
In developing the latest Endangered List, PHM will consider any building, district, site, structure, or object whose historic features, characteristics, and/or significance may be endangered by natural causes, lack of maintenance, development, or remodeling/renovation.
